Listing a book on Taled is free. We charge two fees when a book sells: one to the seller and one to the buyer. You’ll see both before anyone pays.
Seller fee: 10% of the book price
When your book sells, Taled keeps 10% of the book price, with a minimum of 50c per order. It comes out of your payout. We never take a cut of postage.

The 50c minimum only applies when the books in an order add up to less than $5.
Card processing costs come out of Taled’s fees. Stripe doesn’t take a separate cut of your payout.
Our first 50 sellers (the first 50 to finish setting up payouts with Stripe and publish a listing) pay no seller fee for 12 months. See Founding sellers.
Buyer fee: $1.49 buyer protection per order
Buyers pay a flat $1.49 per order. It shows on the listing, and again as its own “Buyer protection” line in your cart and at checkout, so it’s never a surprise at the last step.
An order is everything you buy from one seller in one checkout. Buy three books from one seller and you pay $1.49 once. Buy from two sellers and that’s two orders, so $2.98.
The fee pays for secure payment through Stripe and Taled’s dispute process if your book doesn’t arrive or is significantly not as described. It isn’t refundable once your order’s paid, except where the law says otherwise or the seller cancels your whole order before posting it. It doesn’t replace or limit your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. Read more on the Buyer protection page.
A full example
A $12 paperback with $8 postage:

The buyer pays $12 + $8 postage + $1.49 buyer protection = $21.49.
•
The seller receives $12 less the $1.20 seller fee, plus the $8 postage = $18.80.
•
Taled keeps $2.69 ($1.20 + $1.49) and pays the card processing costs out of that.
If the seller is a founding seller, they receive the full $20.00 and the buyer still pays $21.49.
Postage
Sellers set postage on each listing, including combined postage for more than one book. The buyer pays it on top of the book price and all of it goes to the seller. No Taled fee applies to postage.
Cancellations and refunds
If we uphold a buyer’s claim, the buyer gets the book price and postage back. We recover it from the seller’s payout where Stripe allows, and Taled covers anything we can’t recover.
The $1.49 buyer protection fee isn’t refundable once an order’s paid, because the payment and dispute handling it pays for has already been done. That’s the case except where the law says otherwise, and there’s one exception for seller cancellations.
If the seller cancels the whole order before posting it, so nothing ships, the buyer gets everything back, including the $1.49. If only part of the order is cancelled and the rest still arrives, the $1.49 isn’t refunded. Each seller in a cart is a separate order, so one seller cancelling only refunds that order’s $1.49. On an upheld claim, the buyer gets the book price and postage back and the $1.49 stays.
Sellers don’t pay the seller fee on an order that’s cancelled or fully refunded.
Payments and payouts
Payments go through Stripe. Sellers set up payouts with Stripe, which checks their identity and pays into the bank account they connect. Sellers are paid once they ship or confirm the order. We don’t hold money in a standing escrow.
Taled is the marketplace, not the seller. When you buy a book, you’re buying it from the person who listed it.
GST and currency
All fees are in Australian dollars and include GST if it applies.
If fees change
We’ll give notice before any fee changes, and a change won’t apply to orders already placed.
