Prohibited and Restricted Listings
Last updated 29 September 2026
Taled is a marketplace for preloved physical books. That's it. This page covers what you can list, what needs extra care, and what isn't allowed. It's part of our Terms of Use and Seller Terms, and it works alongside our Community Guidelines.
If you're not sure whether a book is OK, email support@taled.com.au before you list it. We'd rather answer a question than remove a listing.
What you can list
•
Paperbacks and hardcovers, fiction and non-fiction, in any genre.
•
Series and sets sold as one listing, including boxed sets and partial runs, as long as you say which volumes are included.
•
Comics, graphic novels and manga.
•
Children's books, picture books and board books, if they're safe (see below).
•
Rare, collectable, first edition, signed and special editions.
•
Textbooks and study guides, as physical copies.
•
Books with wear, as long as the listing says so.
Every book must be one you own, have with you, and can post or hand over. No drop-shipping from another seller or retailer, and no pre-orders.
Allowed with extra care
Ex-library books. Fine if the library officially withdrew or sold the book, which usually means a "withdrawn" or "discard" stamp. Say it's ex-library in the listing and show the stamps, stickers or barcodes in your photos.
Signed copies. Only call a book signed if you're confident the signature is real, and say where it came from if you know (a launch, a signing, a signed edition from the publisher). Don't call a bookplate a signed copy. Taled doesn't check signatures, so buyers rely on your description.
Special editions. Sprayed edges, foiled covers and exclusive subscription box editions are welcome if they're genuine publisher editions. Say which edition it is.
Annotated or used books. Highlighting, notes, names inside the cover, and filled-in activity or colouring pages are all fine if you disclose them and show them.
Textbooks with access codes. You can sell the book. Assume the code's been used unless you know it hasn't, and say so. Don't sell codes on their own.
Adult fiction. Lawful adult fiction, including explicit romance and dark romance, is allowed. Use a photo of the real cover, don't add explicit extra images, and mention in the description if the content is explicit. Taled members can be as young as 16, so publications that can legally be sold only to adults aren't allowed (see below).
Smells. A faint musty, smoky or perfumed smell is OK if you say so in the listing.
Not allowed
Anything that isn't a physical book
•
Ebooks, PDFs, scans and other digital files.
•
Audiobooks, including audio CDs and download codes.
•
Digital access codes, gift cards and vouchers.
•
Bookmarks, tote bags, candles, merch and other book-adjacent items listed on their own.
•
Magazines, newspapers, calendars and posters.
•
Book safes and hollowed-out books.
A bookmark tucked inside or the book's original slipcase is fine. A bundle isn't OK if the extra item is itself something we don't allow, like drugs, vapes, tobacco, alcohol, weapons or knives.
Fakes and unauthorised copies
•
Counterfeit books, including cheap copies of popular titles bought from overseas sites that aren't from the real publisher.
•
Photocopied, printed or spiral-bound copies of someone else's book, including textbooks.
•
Bootleg print-on-demand copies and unofficial "special editions".
•
Bound fan fiction or unauthorised translations sold as if they were published books.
•
Fake signed copies.
Selling unauthorised copies can breach Australian copyright law. If you own the rights to a book and see an infringing listing, our Terms of Use explain how to send us a notice.
Books that aren't yours to sell
•
Stolen books, including books taken from a shop, school or another person.
•
Library books that the library hasn't officially discarded.
•
Books from a street library or community book swap shelf, which are meant to be shared for free.
•
Advance reader copies, uncorrected proofs and other copies marked "not for resale".
Illegal or restricted content
•
Publications that are Refused Classification (RC) in Australia, or that would be.
•
Publications classified Category 1 Restricted or Category 2 Restricted. Australian law limits their sale to adults, and we can't check buyers' ages.
•
Child sexual abuse material, or any material that sexualises children. We have zero tolerance. We'll remove it, close the account and report it to the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE) and police.
•
Material that promotes, instructs in or supports terrorism or violent extremism.
•
Material that gives detailed instructions for crime or violence, like making weapons or explosives.
We don't remove books because their ideas are unpopular. We remove material that's illegal to sell in Australia or that puts people at risk.
Unsafe items
•
Anything under a product safety recall. You can search recalls at productsafety.gov.au.
•
Children's and novelty books that don't meet Australian mandatory safety standards, such as books with toys or small parts attached that could be a choking risk for young children.
•
Sound or light-up books with button or coin batteries where the battery compartment is loose, broken or no longer closes securely.
Books in unsafe condition
•
Books with mould, mildew, or signs of silverfish, bookworm or other pests.
•
Books with bodily fluids, sharp objects, or damage from fire or flood that makes them unsafe to handle.
Listings that aren't real listings
•
Services, like book binding, cover design or reading lists.
•
Wanted ads and "in search of" posts.
•
Placeholder, test or "coming soon" listings, and listings for books you don't have yet.
•
Listings with a fake price, or a price you plan to change in chat.
•
Listings that include your phone number, email or social handles to take the sale off Taled.
What happens if you list something that isn't allowed
We'll hide or remove the listing. If it's already sold, we'll cancel the order and the buyer gets a refund under our Buyer Protection and Refunds, and we may reverse or hold the payout for that sale.
For an honest mistake, like a magazine or an ex-library book without the disclosure, we'll usually just email you and let you fix or relist it. Repeated breaches can lead to limits on selling or a suspension. Selling stolen, counterfeit or illegal items can mean we close your account straight away and report it to police or the relevant authority.
If we hide your listing, you'll see a note on it in the app. If you think we got it wrong, go to Account, then Settings & Help, then Appeal a decision, or email support@taled.com.au.
See something that shouldn't be here?
Tap the ⋯ menu on the listing, choose Report listing, and pick Prohibited item or Not a real book or misleading. Add a note if you can, like "this edition doesn't exist" or "the photos are from a publisher's website". You won't hear back about every report, but we read them all.
